Buying a tailored suit used to be something you’d have to visit London’s infamous Savile Row for, and you’d be told to expect a pretty hefty price tag; often in the thousands. But nowadays, made-to-measure suiting has become far more accessible, and customers have more options than ever.

Here at Heaphys, we offer a made-to-measure suit service. Our suits are crafted from scratch in our makers’ purpose-built factory, with the same traditional methods we’ve used since 1831. We never compromise on quality and hold our suits to the highest of standards. It’s why we’ve been on the high street for over 175 years!

So, just how much should a custom suit cost and what dictates the final price? Let’s get into the details, so you can find the perfect fit for you.

Why a made-to-measure suit is better than off-the-peg

Generally speaking, made-to-measure suits are far better quality than off-the-peg. They’re made specifically for you, to your exact size and shape, and to the colour and style you’re looking for. Most importantly, you get to choose the cloth.

With an off-the-peg suit, the cloth, lining, style, and features are designed and mass-produced for customers all over the world. In other words, these suits aren’t made with you in mind. They’re made to fit as many people as possible, making it more difficult to find the right size and style for your body.

You’ll probably find off-the-pegs cheaper, but unless you see your dream suit hanging up in the shops, there’s really no comparison. A made-to-measure is a suit for you, by you. Design yours today.

Will a tailored suit last longer?

Another reason made-to-measure suits are sought after is that they often last longer. For one, a made-to-measure suit takes time, care and attention to detail - all hallmarks of a quality product built to last. Secondly, you get to choose the cloth. While it’s important to understand that some cloths are more robust than others, off-the-peg suits are often manufactured with cheaper materials, meaning the chances of it lasting longer than a properly tailored suit aren’t so high.

Our advice? If you’re looking to wear your next made-to-measure suit two or three times a week, ask your tailor to take you through some sturdier materials. Lightweight, closely-fitting cloth is unlikely to last as long as a more robust cloth. Suits require proper care, and the best thing to do with any suit is to rotate it properly to allow it to recover.

Personal taste

To put things simply, as with anything made to your exact wants and needs, your taste will dictate the price. Some materials are more expensive than others; a three-piece suit will use more material than a two-piece, and the more details you add, the more time your tailor spends on you and your suit. Can a tailor-made suit change as your body does?

Customers often ask, “If I lose or gain weight, can my suit be adjusted?” The short answer is, yes. If you happen to change in size, say, after packing on some ‘Christmas insulation’, adjustments can be made. For this reason alone, a made-to-measure suit is an attractive investment.

But bear in mind, while it’s possible to take a suit in by two to three inches, you can only take it out by around one inch. In other words, after your final fitting, be careful with cake. Is it better just to rent a suit when you need one?

Ask yourself this. “Will I need a suit for more than two occasions, or do I just need a one-off?” If your lifestyle asks that you wear a suit often, for all the reasons we’ve discussed above, a made-to-measure suit is by far the better choice. Buying a suit should be an investment. And if you intend to look your best on a regular basis, it’s a no-brainer. Fortunately, Heaphys do both. You can hire a suit from us right here.
