They say you can tell a lot by man’s shoes. You can tell a lot about their personality and their choices. You can tell what they believe or feel.
They say you can tell a lot by man’s shoes. You can tell a lot about their personality and their choices. You can tell what they believe or feel.

“Momma always says there's an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. Momma said they'd take me anywhere. She said they was my magic shoes.” - Forest Gump

When you think about it, it makes sense.

Your shoes don’t get washed or ironed. They they’re not hung up or dry cleaned. Shoes come into contact with every area you ever go to and can really capture and store your every step.

Not convinced? One thing you can certainly tell about a man through his shoes is his attention to detail. Choosing the right shoes for the right outfit and occasion shows that you care about your appearance, and this in turn can tell people you meet that you’re an organised and conscientious person…

… or just a really cool guy!

Let’s help you choose the right pair for your next outfit, occasion, or wardrobe.

Choosing the right pair of men’s shoes for the right occasions…

Smart or Casual shoes?

What type of outfit or occasion are you considering? Are you looking for a smart or casual pair of shoes?

A smart pair of shoes is usually one you’d wear with a suit and generally that means polished leather and usually in black, brown or tan.

Smart shoes usually go with a suit, pair of smart trousers, or some smart cotton tailored chinos.

Casual shoes are much softer in construction that a smart shoe. Think more relaxed and more ready for sprint down to the wine bar or the harbour. Casual shoes can be suede or more like a sports shoe.

A casual shoe works best with the more casual dress code like shorts, jeans, and linen trousers.

What colour shoes do you need?

The most common colour for men’s shoe is black, followed by various shades of brown. This is of course a practical colour, given then shoes can quite literally be put through their paces and go almost everywhere with you.

A smart black shoe is best for business or for those special occasions like weddings or black tie dinners. A smart black shoe will work with most outfits and goes well with black, grey, and navy trousers. We wouldn’t recommend wearing black shoes with red or brown trousers, and they look a bit odd with beige trousers.

A brown shoe is a little more versatile though and can be worn with a suit if you feel they’re smart enough but then they’re equally at home and on trend with most shades of casual trousers too. The lighter the shade, the more relaxed the look, particularly if you add detail. Brown brogues are less formal than the same shade of Oxfords, for example. Tan is the most casual tone of brown, and it works with jeans of all shades and chinos of any colour, especially in summer when you want to lighten your look up a bit.

The fit

Getting the correct fit for your shoe is so important. We all have very different sizes and dimension of feet so selecting the right shoe for you can take time but will benefit you for years to come.

If you’re looking to buy pair of men’s shoes to wear again and again then it’s important to get the correct fit.

Some examples of feet and shoes could be:

· Wide foot or high instep. It’s best to avoid a narrow or pointy shoe. A lace up shoe with a good opening around the laces is good for adjustment.

· Need a softer shoe? Make sure they’re reasonably snug to start with so that they mould to your foot shape.

· Get the width right. Make sure the shoes fit you well on the width so they’re not too loose or too tight.

· Get the right size shoe. With the laces undone, slide your foot forwards in the shoe. If there’s a gap at the heel that’s more than a centimetre, then try the next size down.

If you’re buying an expensive pair of shoes then it’s well worth the time invested here to get them to fit perfectly. Different style shoes suit different people. Work with your feet, style, and budget and you’ll find the perfect shoe for you.

Looking for comfort?

There’s nothing like a well-made shoe for the ultimate comfort. Your feet are very important and were not designed to be crammed into a fashionable, ill-fitting fake leather coffins. Well-made shoes will support your feet and do their job for years to come, rather than break your feet or wear out faster due to a poor fitting.

If you’re on your feet all day then this is even more important, and we’d recommend a Goodyear Welted leather sole if you are, as these can be replaced and repaired over time. You could also look at buying a Rubber Welted sole if you’re walking outdoors frequently as these are far better suited.

If the shoe fits…

A great pair of shoes says a lot about you, and they will support and carry you for years to come.

Buying cheap shoes is a bit like buying cheap tyres for your car when you think about it. The tyres (and your shoes) are the only thing in contact with the ground. Surely they deserve a little more investment to keep you grounded?
