Men: Your New Years Resolution is staring you in the face! It's time to step out of those trainers and joggers.
I’m just going to say it. In 2025 men need to change how they dress when they go out. Not just “out out” I mean outside the house. Men used to present themselves well in this country when out in public and we need to get back to that boys.

You’re not getting dressed up for work either gents’ Not even with a jacket, let alone a necktie. Neatness and style are being sacrificed in favour of comfort and, to be frank - carelessness. Working from home and an overly relaxed approach from your employers are partly to blame.

Go to Italy, France and Spain and you’ll see men everywhere who take meticulous care of their appearance but somehow the standards have really slipped here. We were once a nation of the best dressers. The world wanted to dress like “An English Gentleman” but now the tailors of Eastern nations have taken the look and are using it better than we are.

Stanley Tucci for instance lives in the UK part time and dresses well, if not impeccably at all times. He complained about the decline in men’s dressing in his book, What I Ate in One Year. “So many people wear the same thing for a night out on the town or to the theatre that they wear around the house, which most often is a T-shirt and jeans or sweatpants.” At the moment men seem to want to step out of the house in something soft and slouchy - god forbid they look overdressed - and as a result there are fewer formal shirts, ties and suits being made than ever.

What men should wear in 2025

You can dress well for everyday in an understated way. I.e. by going for some dark jeans, a quality fine knit jumper and suede shoes or switch the jumper for a linen shirt in the summer months. But also add some nice details and accessories to your look. And don’t tell me it’s about the cost of the clothing. Some of these tracksuits guys are wandering about in cost £100’s. A nice gentleman visited us recently and was going on a date. He naturally wanted to impress so he chose a nice checked red shirt, some smart denims and woollen shawl necked cardigan. Stylish yet understated.

Find your own way, have fun with your style. You can choose to wear softer elements like a knitted tie or trainer style shoes with your outfits But be careful. If you’re really not sure, the team at Heaphys can always offer some advice.

So throw away your sweatpants and invest in a nice jacket. But above all please make an effort with what you wear.
