In early January, Men’s Fashion Week took place in London and, as ever the event gave us a glimpse at forthcoming clothing trends… and a few surprises.

As always, we paid close attention to Men’s Fashion Week and identified ten tips we’d like to put into real-world context for, well, normal people!

Let’s be honest - fashion weeks are often a little hard to relate to, so consider this your definitive guide to how the January catwalk relates to your everyday clothing.

Tip 1: Cross-body bags

You’ll doubtless have seen people wearing cross-body bags on the high street, but sometimes they look a little awkward.

Instead, why not opt for a smart leather briefcase with a shoulder strap by Jekyll & Hide which will help you carry everything you need for the office?

Tip 2: Cuban collar shirts

There’s a time and a place for a Cuban collar shirt, but it probably isn’t a particularly regular occurrence in your life.

A printed colourful summer shirt is a great alternative - particularly if you pick one with a regular, soft casual collar by Casa Moda or Claudio Campione.

Tip 3: Flares

We’ve all worn flares at some stage, haven’t we?

Haven’t we?

70s party fancy dress aside, a better alternative would be some nicely tapered trousers or chinos made from relaxed cotton stretch fabric. And you can pick pretty much any colour you like!

Tip 4: Long shorts

Long shorts might conjure up images of being poorly dressed for school sports days, but there is an alternative - tailored shorts.

When you choose the right ones for your body shape, these will fit well, look good, and have the perfect knee length for the summer. Just don’t match them with your office shoes, please.

Tip 5: Over-sized blazers

When was the last time you thought, “I really need to put on an over-sized blazer today”?

No, us neither.

However, there’s a good counterpoint here, which is that a well-fitted jacket or blazer will get you noticed for the right reasons and offer a smart but more informal look.

Tip 6: Patchwork prints

If you’d rather not wear something resembling a picnic blanket, try a shirt featuring a single print or pattern.

Pick the right print or pattern and that shirt will look great in its own right without attracting the wrong sort of comments.

Tip 7: Relaxed suits

Can you really be relaxed in a suit? Actually, you can, and it all comes down to the tailoring.

A nicely fitted suit made from a fabric like cotton or linen will still look great but achieve a far more relaxed look and feel.

Tip 8: Sunglasses

As evergreen trends go, sunglasses are up there, but it’s easy to get them wrong - partly because they’re such a personal choice.

If you want to keep your sunglasses looking timeless, opt for a pair of Aviators or our Bamboo Club Masters by Swole Panda. Just remember that any sunglasses you choose should suit the shape of your face - it might take a few test fittings to find the right pair.

Tip 9: High waist trousers

Yikes. How many people have pulled up their trousers as far as possible for comic effect? It’s rarely - if ever - a good look. Just ask Simon Cowell.

Instead, opt for a trouser that fits well, and which sits perfectly on the waist (i.e. just above the hips).

Tip 10: 2 strap slides

For the uninitiated, these are basically sandals with two straps that rest across the top of your feet.

They’re OK for summer. Sort of. Unless you’re wearing socks. Please don’t be that guy.

Instead, opt for simple, light flip-flops or a boat shoe; they’re just as comfortable and far more attractive.

Putting it into practice

We hope our take on these tips have helped you relate somewhat to Men’s Fashion Week.
