Picture the scene: you’ve got a wedding to attend this weekend, and, thankfully, you’ve got just the suit.

But, what colour will you wear with it? More importantly - how do you avoid screwing up a perfectly decent suit with a somewhat iffy choice of shirt or tie? And no, you don’t have to get your wife or partner to sort it.

It’s a common problem, but one we’d love to help you with. So, without further ado, here are some tips for two of the most common suit colours.

I’ve got a grey suit - which colours will go with it?

If you’ve picked a light or mid-grey suit, the choices of shirt are satisfyingly simple.

We’d recommend a white or light blue shirt in this instance. Both will offer the perfect contrast against grey but also give you the basis for pretty much any coloured tie. It’s why these classic shirt colours (which are often joined these days by pale pink) never grow old.

If you fancy something a little different, you’ll find that grey suits will also sit comfortably with shirts in pale greens, purples, or turquoise shades.

I love my navy suit, but what colours will match?

Just like grey, navy is a very versatile suit colour, so it’s a great choice for lots of occasions.

For instance, if you want to brighten things up, you can add a pink shirt. If you’d rather keep things traditional and patriotic, go for a white shirt and red tie. When spring arrives, there’s nothing like throwing a yellow tie into the mix, either.

The saying “blue and green should never be seen” is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to navy suits. You’ll find that a light blue shirt and the correct shade of green will actually look very smart indeed.

What colour suit should I wear to a wedding?

You’d think the bride would have the hardest time choosing wedding attire but picking the right suit as a guest can be just as tricky.

Navy and grey suits remain popular choices in 2020, but there’s a new kid on the block, too - light slate blue (you’ll find this in store this season in as many as four styles).

If you’re a groomsman, it’s important to pick a colour that matches the colour scheme of the wedding - for example, the bridesmaids’ dresses or flowers. For guests, it pays to do a bit of homework to find out what the colour scheme is and then pick a suit, shirt, and tie that compliment it.

For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing pink, you could pick a burgundy tie. If they’ve opted for sky blue, your choice of navy should go down very well indeed.

How seasonal is colour?

As you’d expect, colour is incredibly seasonal. Thankfully, the way in which colours follow the seasons is pretty predictable, too.

For instance, when the leaves begin to appear on trees to signal the start of spring, yellow is a popular choice for clothing. Come autumn, you can expect earthy colours such as rusty orange and, when the festivities begin in December - yes, you guessed it, red.

These are some of the more classic examples, but there are other colours introduced by designers each year which can be found in casual men’s shirts, cotton trousers, and neckwear accessories.

What colours are fashionable for men in 2020?

For spring and summer 2020, blue is the colour to go for - especially when you pick a pastel shade.

Autumn and winter are a little different but provide just as much inspiration. This year, expect green to be one of the most popular menswear colours when the nights begin to draw in. We’d recommend checking out racing green, forest green, and even emerald green if you need to make a statement at that time of the year.
